The Grand Theft Auto series isn't simply a video game franchise. It's a cultural phenomenon. Given That Grand Theft Auto III in 2001, the open-world series has stayed one of the strongest properties in all of home entertainment. Some love it, some dislike it, but there are couple of-- players or otherwise-- who haven't become aware of GTA.
Grand Theft Auto is popular for its open-world environments, its satirical take on American culture, and naturally, its excessive representation (and possibly glorification) of sex and violence. While all of this holds true, few speak about maybe the primary reason GTA has embedded itself into the psyche of those who play it: the characters. Specifically, its turning cast of protagonists. From Italian criminals, street hustlers, and psychopaths, GTA has included a distinct and unforgettable variety of criminal leads.
Below are a few of the greatest Grand Theft Auto lead characters of all time.
GTA enables players the liberty to trigger total carnage in the virtual streets the games happen in. In some installments (especially GTAIV), this caused some level of cognitive dissonance. Why would a fairly subtle character like Niko Bellic wish to shoot rockets into a park filled with civilians? Even a few of the crazier GTA characters wouldn't do half the important things gamers can make them. Then there's GTAV's Trevor Philips.
Unlike GTAV's other protagonists (Michael and Franklin), Trevor embodies the unchecked and pure chaos of Grand Theft Auto. He is the perfect vessel for gamers to fulfill all of their damaging desires. Trevor is certainly not a person you 'd wish to socialize with in reality ... however he's sure fun to play as in GTAV. He is the essential GTA protagonist.
The complete reverse of Trevor Philips is GTAIV's Niko Bellic. The majority of GTA lead characters are psychopathic American gangsters who like robbery, whoring, and killing. Niko is a peace-seeking immigrant from Yugoslavia who battled in the Yugoslav Wars. Like the majority of immigrants, Niko comes to America for the possibility to start over and live "the American dream." He quickly finds that for people like him, the dream is absolutely nothing more than a fantasy.
Many individuals didn't value Niko Bellic's distinctly mournful personality. GTA video games were always about pure fun, however GTAIV and its lead character tried to provide something with more depth. Gamers can ultimately decide if moving GTA in this direction was wise, however no one can state Niko isn't a special protagonist in the franchise. There genuinely is no other character like him.
GTA: Vice City's Tommy Vercetti is the very first lead character in GTA history who can in fact speak. Because of that, it is easy to understand what inspires the Italian mobster. Like Trevor Philips, Tommy is a crazed individual who fasts to anger and violence. However, he is also highly intelligent and is a master coordinator; even if those strategies just involve eliminating all his enemies.
Tommy Vercetti is plainly affected by Scarface, "Mister Blonde" from Reservoir Dogs, and even his voice star, Ray Liotta. His story mirror's those of the characters he's based on. Like Mister Blonde, Tommy leaves jail after doing time for his crime family. Like Scarface, he arrives in Vice City (Miami) and forms his own criminal empire. Tommy is another prototypical GTA lead character that gamers can't get enough of.
